The Sila upland is one of the main elements of Calabria region, having a total area of about 150,000 hectares . Sila is one of the most scenic areas of the region with wild and wonderful forests and vast expanses of rolling plateaus , with exciting landscapes stretching towards Pollino and Aspromonte . Some of the most important water resevoirs can be found in Sila where the major regional waterways originate and flow to. The existing Silan lakes are all artificial and were made in the first half of the last century . Its forest area consists mainly of beech and pine forests of the typical Silan pine-tree , the Laricio . Its large valleys open along the ridges where pastoralism is practiced.
